Acapulco, Guerrero See $283 Million Boost From Summer Visitors

The Acapulco Destination Marketing Office and the Secretary of Tourism for the State of Guerrero recently reported that that the city of Acapulco and Guerrero welcomed more than one million tourists during the summer months, resulting in an economic impact of more than $283 million.

In an effort to continually increase the number of tourists visiting Guerrero, the Office of the Secretary of Tourism for Guerrero (SEFOTUR) has announced the development of a plan to revitalize the port city of Acapulco, focusing on investment in infrastructure by the state and federal governments, promotion of tourist attractions and new entertainment options for visitors, and development of hotels and resorts through private investment.

Ángel Aguirre Rivero, governor of Guerrero, recently announced the investment of $202 million in infrastructure in Acapulco. The investment will be used to build the Avenida Escénica Alterna and the Macrotúnel, both designed to connect the Traditional Zone with the exclusive Diamond Zone. The State of Guerrero also received $20 million from the federal government as part of the Coordination and Reallocation of Resources Agreement of 2011.

In addition to the investments made by state and federal governments, private investment has increased throughout the city. For example, over the past two years, the Las Brisas Hotel Collection has invested $30 million dollars to remodel the Las Brisas Acapulco hotel, one of the most celebrated and legendary hotels in the destination.

Furthermore, Mundo Imperial, a private development owned by Grupo Autofin Mexico, commenced development of the Expo at Mundo Imperial meeting and convention center with a $28.3 million dollar investment. Expected to be complete in early 2012, the center, located in the Diamond Zone, will house over 355,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space.
