The Gramercy Park Hotel, Reel Life to Real Life

March 11, 2009 By: Michael Browne

While it may now be the height of fashion and celebrity in New York, the Gramercy Park Hotel was not always that way. The hip Ian Schrager-owned hotel, which played host to the Rolling Stones in the 1960s and U2 in the 80s, has seen its share of hard times. By the time Schrager, former Studio 54 owner and hotel innovator, purchased the hotel after the death of owner Herbert R. Weissberg in 2003, the legendary lodging had fallen far from being the site of glamorous celebrity excesses it once was.

In the 2008 film Hotel Gramercy Park, director Douglas Keeve goes behind closed doors to reveal the family saga and tragedies that run through the hotel's history.

Hotel Gramercy Park follows Schrager's renovations while examining the hotel's role in the neighborhood and how its changing presence affects the lives of those both in and around the new Gramercy Park Hotel.

Today one of New York’s hottest hotels, the Gramercy Park Hotel is also doing its bit for New York’s recession-hit tourists who would still like to experience a bit of the good life. Now through April 30, for every night a guest spends at the hotel, at its best available rates, they will receive the next night at 50 percent off. The offer applies to all 185 guest rooms and luxury suites, each with its own unique layout, vivid Renaissance color palette and distinctive collection of art and objects. During their stay, guests can experience a newly installed collection of 20th century masterpieces by artists Andy Warhol, Fernando Botero, Richard Prince, George Condo and, of course, Julian Schnabel (Schrager's design partner). Agents can call (866) 784-1300 and mention the offer or book online at http://www.gramercyparkhotel.com/50off.html.
