Ethiopian Airlines Has Positive Mid-Year Financial Performance of 2008/09 Fiscal YearMarch 23, 2009 By: Mackenzie Allison
In the first half of the fiscal year 2008/09, Ethiopian Airlines registered higher revenues and profits compared to its performance during the same period of the previous year. The company seems to be flying high at the moment. The airline recently received attention from the U.S. for having been the official carrier at the Adventures in Travel Expo in Washington D.C. on February 21 and 22.
Based on preliminary reports, the airline, which provides service to 33 cities in Africa and a total of 53 international destinations worldwide, generated $599 million in operating revenues for the period in review, representing an increase of 54.8 percent over the six months result of 2007/08 budget year. A net profit of $46 million is also recorded for this period, which is 9 percent higher than the results of the same period (July-December) last year.
The main factor that contributed to the increased revenue was a growth in traffic (which was stimulated by the increase of frequencies), the introduction of new flights on the international sector, the augmentation in cargo revenues, and steps taken to streamline operational as well as marketing activities.
One of the major activities during the six months of the budget year 2008/09 was the launch of new services to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo; and Abuja, Nigeria.
