December 29, 2014

airplaneThe search for the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 expanded early Tuesday, according to a report on CNN

The Airbus A320-200 went missing from radar Sunday morning as it neared rough weather over the Java Sea, the Guardian reports. The plane was approximately 40 minutes into a two hour flight between Surabaya, Indonesia, and Singapore. 162 people were on board.

The Indonesian government began a search of the Java sea near the island of Belitung starting Sunday afternoon. On Monday, the search expanded to invlude navy ships, planes and helicopters. Singapore, Malaysia and Australia have also dispatched aid.

CNN reports that, as of Tuesday morning, the Indonesian government has expanded the search to include four additional areas.

"Our early conjecture is that the plane is in the bottom of the sea," Bambang Sulistyo, the head of the search and rescue agency, told CNN, based on the flight track of the plane and its last known coordinates.

France has sent two investigators to Indonesia, who are due to arrive in Jakarta on Monday.
