Airline Sales Grow But Transactions Drop

The Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) data for July 2008 shows total sales increasing 3.4 percent for the month to $6.7 billion. This totals $51.6 billion year to date (YTD). It is also a 4.4 percent increase compared to the same period of 2007.

Total transactions declined to 11,866,796, a 6.7 percent decline. Year to date transactions have dropped 4.2 percent, ARC says. Domestic transactions are down 7.7 percent and 5.8 percent YTD. International transactions also declined 3.7 percent for July. YTD international transactions were up 0.3 percent.

Domestic fares declined slightly to 0.06 percent to $3.1 billion or a 1.3 percent YTD decline to $23.2 billion. International fares increased 3.7 percent for the month or 5.6 percent YTD to $21.1 billion. Total fares were reported at $5.8 billion for July, a 1.6 percent increase.

The biggest gains reported by ARC were in total taxes and fees that grew 14.5 percent for the month or 11.3 percent YTD or $6.7 billion YTD. Average daily sales were  $11,334 with 18,051 retail locations reporting along with 1,252 STP locations.
