A British Airways jumbo jet has had to return to Heathrow shortly after taking off following reports from residents on the flight path of "a loud bang" on board.

The Boeing 747 - BA107 - had left Heathrow bound for Dubai around 1pm today.

It was while the aircraft was flying over Kent that residents there said they had heard a bang.

It is understood the crew had had a problem retracting the undercarriage and a decision had been made to turn back to Heathrow.

A BA spokeswoman said: "The aircraft landed safely back at Heathrow after a technical problem. We're sorry for the delay to our customer's journey. They will soon be on another aircraft and on their way to Dubai."
