DOT Ends Consumer Protection Comment Period

washington dcThe Department of Transportation (DOT) said it does not expect additional comments on its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on transparency of airline ancillary fees and other consumer protection issues beyond September 29.

The DOT sought comment on a number of proposals to enhance protections for air travelers. Admitting the complexity of the proposals, on July 31, 2014, the DOT extended the comment period to September 22, 2014 and further extended the deadline until September 29, 2014.

The controversial rulemaking has drawn mixed praise and criticism from consumer groups and airlines, the Travel Technology Association (Travel Tech), Open Allies for Airfare Transparency, Airlines for America (A4A), the Regional Airline Association (RAA) among them.

The DOT said comments received after September 29 will be considered to the extent practicable.
