FAA Focuses on Runway SafetyJuly 14, 2008 By: Kirk Cassels
After a near-collision of aand Comair flight at JFK International Airport last Friday induced the amelioration of takeoff and landing sequences on perpendicular runways, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced today new measures to improve runway safety, the Associated Press reports. The announcement comes after growing criticism from federal lawmakers and airline industry leaders about high risks of runway incursions.
A major portion of the FAA's plan to improve runway safety includes the implementation of new runway lights at 21 major U.S airports. The FAA website says the lights will change color to notify aircraft when a runway is safe for landing or crossing.
The selected airports are: Atlanta, Baltimore-Washington, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago-O'Hare, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Denver, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston Intercontinental, John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle and Washington-Dulles.
