FAA Lifts Turkey Flight Ban Following Attempted Coup

turkish airlinesThe U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has lifted a ban on flights to and from Turkey following a failed attempt by a faction of the country’s military to overthrow the government led by President Tayyip Erdogan, Reuters reports. Turkish Airlines said that it would resume flights to the United States Tuesday morning.

The U.S. State Department has issued a new travel warning for Turkey, suggesting that U.S. citizens “reconsider travel to Turkey at this time.” The State Department also noted that tourists have been explicitly targeted by international and indigenous terrorist organizations.

The coup attempt also prompted multiple cruise lines, including Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises, to cancel calls in the country. A full list of changes is available here

The attempt follows a series of terrorist bombings in Turkey this year, including an attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport in late June. According to a May study by Allianz Global Assistance, travel to Istanbul is down 43.7 percent this summer versus summer 2015.
