Five Airlines Say No To Carry On Bag Fees

April 19, 2010 By: George Dooley

Five major carriers— American, Delta, United, US Airways and JetBlue— have agreed not to follow the lead of Spirit Airlines to charge for carryon bags, according to the Associated Press.

The promise was made to New York Senator Charles Schumer. Senator Schumer and five other Democratic senators— New Hampshire's Jeanne Shaheen, Maryland's Ben Cardin, Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar, and New Jersey's Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg) support legislation that would tax airlines if they charge carry-on bag fees.

Despite Congressional action and consumer resistance, Spirit Airlines CEO Ben Baldanza defended the move and told the AP that his airline is moving ahead with its carryon bag fee. He defended the move by saying that Spirit has lowered its fares more than the price of the new baggage fee.
