The governments of the United States and Japan have announced an announced an amendment to the nations' air transport agreement enabling U.S. carriers to operate daytime flights to and from Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The agreement also allows for two additional slot pairs, one daytime and one nighttime, between Haneda and U.S. cities.

According to an analysis by Reuters, the earlier flight times could attract more visitors to Haneda and allow for connections that used to be impossible when travelers landed late at night. Additionally, Haneda is closer to central Tokyo than the city's other airport, Narita International Airport, at 13 miles away instead of 50 miles away. The daytime flights could start as early as this fall.

United Airlines applauded the move, saying in a written release that it would create new business and leisure travel opportunities. United also said that it will look to provide more convenient access to Tokyo from its San Francisco hub.

Hawaiian Airlines, which flies daily between Haneda and Honolulu International Airport, also released a statement supporting the decision. The airline will also inaugurate daily service between Honolulu and Narita in July.
