Ryanair Voices Tax Protest

July 12, 2006 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

Low-cost airline Ryanair plans to cancel service on one route from London Luton Airport in Britain to Vasteras, Sweden and to reduce its flights between Malmo in south Sweden and Stansted, and between Gothenburg in western Sweden and Glasgow in Scotland. Ryanair said the moves are a protest against a planned new airline ticket tax enacted by the European Parliament that would add 30 percent to its low-cost tickets. The European Parliament wants airlines to bear what it views as legitimate expenses for harming the environment. Airlines strongly disagree on the intent of the legislation, calling it simply a way to raise extra cash; they also say it won't help the environment.
