Service Upgrades Debut at HNL

July 14, 2006 By: Camie Foster Travel Agent

Honolulu International Airport is providing two new services to make things easier for travelers. According to Rod Haraga, director of the state Department of Transportation, airport staff members have begun operating free shuttle service for travelers making their way from security checkpoints to far-flung gates at the international terminal. Haraga says drivers look for passengers with a lot of carry-on luggage and/or children and offer them a lift. The second service, scheduled to have started on July 15, is a valet parking option provided at the interisland terminal. Agents may want to alert their clients who are staying on Oahu but making a day trip or overnight hop to another island to consider the service if they're retaining their rental car and short on time. Valets take the cars and return them to the drop off point; users of the service receive a phone number to call to reduce waiting time. The service is $20 a day. Although it's double the cost of self-parking, Haraga says it's competitive compared to similar valet services at such airports as Newark (EWR) and Los Angeles (LAX).
