Air traffic controllers and pilots in France are set to go on strike today, The Daily Telegraph reports, marking the 50th walkout since 2009. Today’s strike is timed to impact travelers attempting to visit the European Championships.
Pilots for SAS AB, which owns Scandinavian Airlines, as well as Easyjet pilots at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, are also striking today, according to the Telegraph. An estimated 240 Scandinavian Airlines flights will be cancelled. Air France said it expects to operate 80 percent of its flights Tuesday night, and Ryanair has cancelled 44 flights.
According to The Independent, British Airways has cancelled four flights on its routes between London and Nice, Barcelona and Madrid, and to and from Paris, Geneva, Milan, Rome, Venice and Zurich.
The air travel strikes coincide with an ongoing strike by French rail workers that began earlier this month and disrupted travel on high-speed SNCF train lines. According to Conde Nast Traveler, that strike is still ongoing, mostly affecting the south of France, including Marseille. The RER line, which operates between central Paris and Charles de Gaulle airport, is operating at approximately one-third capacity, although Eurostar service between London and Paris remains unaffected.
