United Airlines Asks for Nonstop San Francisco-Tokyo Service

February 17, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

United Airlines has sent a proposal to the U.S. Department of Transportation asking to provide nonstop air service between San Francisco and Haneda Airport in Tokyo. Currently, under the U.S.-Japan Open Skies Agreement, there are four pairs of daily U.S.-Haneda slots available to U.S. carriers. United is applying for one of those slots.

This would be United's first nonstop service between San Francisco and Haneda.

Other airlines vying for the slots are Continental (and its subsidiary Continental Micronesia), which wants service from New York/Newark and Guam; Delta, who wants flights from Seattle, Detroit, Los Angeles and Honolulu; and American Airlines, which is requesting service from New York and Los Angeles.
