United Debuts New Mobile App for Android

smartphoneUnited Airlines debuted a new mobile application for the Android platform. It's also been optimized for KitKat, the newest Android operating system.

The airline said its new Android-friendly app has new features, smoother functionality and an improved touch-friendly design. It's available from www.united.com/mobile.

This latest app comes on the heels of United's recent re-design of the mobile app for the iOS 7 platform. United introduced that app last year.

United said the new mobile Android app updates its most popular mobile tasks and introduces new features for Android users including the ability to rotate the screen and stack multiple boarding passes. The mobile app also utilizes a new home screen widget.

Similar to the iOS 7 version, the new app for Android enables customers to view seat maps more clearly, purchase travel options and book award tickets on multiple flights.

"We are intensely focused on providing customers the digital tools that ensure they have a smoother, faster travel experience," said Scott Wilson, United's vice president of merchandising and ecommerce. "Our all-new mobile app and other digital upgrades offer travelers the information they need where and when they need it throughout their journey with United."

Last year, United introduced its mobile app for Windows Phone 8. The airline said it will continue to update its mobile apps regularly and expects to launch more features on the popular iOS 7 app later this year.

United has also redesigned its airport check-in kiosk screens and this summer will introduce its all-new www.united.com Web site.

In 2007, United became the first U.S. airline to introduce mobile boarding passes. It's also the first U.S. carrier to offer mobile boarding at all of the domestic airports it serves. United currently offers mobile boarding at 55 international airports, more than any other U.S.-based carrier.
