Workers' Strike Forces Lufthansa to Cancel Flights

Lufthansa canceled 28 international flights this week after nearly 4,000 of its workers walked off their job in part of a strike to demand higher wages. The airline insists that all passengers traveling to Beijing for for the Olympics are a top priority and that no flights to the Chinese city will be canceled.

In total, the airline canceled 128 flights, which is about 6 percent of its total capacity. Passengers aboard canceled flights were being put on later flights or ones operated by other airlines. The cancellations took place as unofficial negotiations began between Lufthansa officials members of the labor union ver.di aimed began. The strike began Monday, and the number of workers protesting is currently up to 5,000.
