United Airlines to Debut Streaming Movie Content for Laptops and Apple Devices

iphoneIn the coming weeks, United Airlines (www.united.com) will begin offering free in-flight streaming TV shows and movies to those passengers who use their own laptops and Apple devices, according to an article in the Chicago Tribune.

This reflects the industry's move toward providing video entertainment on personal devices rather than overhead and seatback screens. Starting in April, United will begin outfitting planes with the necessary technology for passengers to stream video content.

It won't work for all, however. The initial introduction will only support laptops and Apple mobile devices, such as iPads and iPhones, and require an upcoming United Airlines app. Compatibility with Android devices will be offered later in the year, Karen May, a United spokeswoman told the newspaper.

Expect the service to be free -- at least initially -- but the spokeswoman is quoted as saying she couldn't talk about what, if any, charges would apply in the future.
