Airlines Take Sales Hit

The Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) reported a 11.6 percent decline in total sales to $6.2 billion for October 2008. Year-to-date, ARC said total sales were $70.7 billion, a 1.8 percent gain. Total transactions also dropped 15.3 percent, including domestic transactions by 7.8 percent and international transactions 13.0 percent. International fares declined 13.8 percent to $2.4 billion while domestic fares dropped 13.3 percent to $2.9 billion. Total fares declined 13.5 percent to  $5.3 billion. Total taxes and fees increased .07 percent. Locations reporting included 17, 887 retail locations and 1,228 satellite ticket locations. Average daily sales totaled $10, 607 for the calendar month.
