ARC Reports Declines in Air Sales

The Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) report for January 2009 is a disaster. Total air sales were down 24.6 percent for the month to $5.3 billion compared to January 2008. Of the 13 categories tracked by ARC’s monthly report, only one – the percent of e-tickets -showed an increase of 1.4 percent to 99.2 percent. All other 12 categories showed double digit declines.

Domestic fares and transactions fell 24.8 and 19.7 percent respectively. International fares were down 28.5 percent, as was international transactions.  The average daily sales reported were $9, 237 for 17, 611 retail locations reporting along with 1,162 satellite ticketing locations (STP’s). Taxes and fees fell 14.2 percent.  ARC said that 173 carriers reported.
