Free Trips/Upgrades on American Airlines to Require Higher Fees, Miles

August 8, 2008 By: Kirk Cassels

American Airlines announced Thursday that it will raise fees and miles needed for customers to receive upgrades and free trips, the Associated Press reports. The change in policy will take place after the airline began its AAdvantage program program 25 years ago.

Beginning October 1, upgrades from an economy/coach seat will cost $50 on a one-way domestic in addition to the already required 15,000 miles. An upgrade from an economy/coach seat on a roundtrip flight will be $100 plus 30,000 miles.

Upgrades fees were also raised for international flights. Fees for an economy/coach upgrade on a  one-way flight from the U.S. to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Europe, Japan or Uruguay will rise from $300 to $350, plus the required 25,000 miles. An upgrade for a one-way flight to India will cost $400 plus 40,000 miles.
