Hawaiian Airlines to Initiate Checked Bag Fees

September 3, 2009 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor

Hawaiian Airlines will begin charging passengers $10 for their first checked bag, effective September 14, on all interisland flights. The airline already charges $17 for a second checked bag and $25 for a third bag on interisland flights. With this fee, Hawaiian now joins competitors Island Air, go! airlines and Mokulele Airlines in charging for the first checked bag.

"Our costs continue to rise and fares have simply not kept pace," said Glenn Taniguchi, Hawaiian's senior vice president of marketing and sales. "We've held the line on this fee as long as possible, but have to remain competitive."

Child car seats, carriers and strollers, as well as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and canes are exempt from the fee. Customers of Hawaiian exempt from the $10 first-bag fee Passengers in the HawaiianMiles Pualani Platinum, Gold and Premier Club programs as well as corporate members, customers traveling in first class, customers traveling on military and government fares, customers traveling on international tickets that include points within Hawaii, and customers flying on the same reservation as someone with exempt status will not be responsible for the fee.
