New Rule Will Check Passenger Names Against Terrorist List

July 12, 2006 By: Joe Pike Travel Agent

USA TODAY is reporting that authorities will check the names of passengers headed from foreign cities to the U.S. against the FBI's comprehensive terrorist watch list before their planes take off. Passengers' names are now checked abroad by airlines against a "no-fly list" that is not as complete as government watch lists. It could also stop the practice of sending back planes once they're in the air because current rules don't give authorities enough time to check if a passenger is on a watch list before a plane departs. The new name-checking system will take effect by the end of the year.
