O’Hare To Get High Tech Baggage Screening SystemOctober 5, 2009 By: Michael Grisafe Travel Agent
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that it would give $13.6 million to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago for the construction of a baggage system designed to strengthen security at airports.
This new security system employees “inline baggage screening,” which the TSA states is more efficient and accurate in detecting possible explosives.
“When this project is completed, more than 80 percent of the checked baggage at O’Hare will be screened inline,” stated TSA Federal Security Director Kathleen Petrowsky.
The TSA states that it is funding inline baggage handling systems in an effort screen luggage for explosives more quickly while shortening the delays caused by many current baggage-screening methods. Several of these improvements include eliminating the need to walk checked baggage to screening areas before security checkpoints, and increased on-screen resolution for Transportation Security Officers, which reduces the need to re-scan baggage.
