As airlines look for “creative” ways to make up for losses in travel worldwide, United Airlines announced Thursday that it would be charging a second-bag fee for passengers on some international routes.
Travelers on transatlantic routes will now have to pay $50 for a second bag, with a small
savings of $5 if they register their bag ahead of time on the United website. This new rate applies to travelers flying between the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean to Europe. However, travelers flying between the U.S. to the Caribbean or Mexico will pay the slightly lower rate of $30, with a modest $3 discount for online baggage check.
United Airlines states that these new changes simply mirror the trends in the industry, citing Continental Airlines and US Airways decision to charge for extra baggage in August.
