SFO Welcomes New Terminal

April 7, 2011 By: George Dooley Travel Agent

The newly renovated T2 at SFO reopens on April 9.

Traveling in and out of San Francisco is about to get even better. Thanks to the grand opening of the newly renovated Terminal 2 (T2) at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). On Saturday, April 9, SFO’s T2 will reopen its doors following an extensive three-year renovation, an investment that cost some $383 million to complete. American Airlines and Virgin America will conduct their operations at the new terminal.

The terminal, which originally opened in 1954, was closed in December 2000 after the opening of SFO’s current International Terminal. The renovation project to restore and revitalize the central terminal began in 2008, with the goal of creating one of the most environmentally friendly airport terminals in the U.S. T2 is expected to achieve LEED Gold Certification, which would make it the nation’s first airport terminal to achieve such status.

The new 640,000 square-foot facility will feature 14 gates capable of accommodating Boeing 747-400 aircraft. It will also house American Airlines’ newest LEED Silver-registered Admirals Club, which will serve as the terminal’s only airport lounge.

To celebrate the opening of its newest Admirals Club, American is offering $50 off a new Admirals Club membership or $25 off a renewal membership purchased at the new T2 Admirals Club through June 30.
