One on One with AMResorts' CEO, President

Travel Agent recently chatted one on one with AMResortsCEO and President Alex Zoyaya and learned of the company's massive expansion plans in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America with a new Costa Rica resort leading the charge.

You may have already heard about the company’s plans for a new Dreams Resort in Costa Rica (originally slated to be a Zoëtry Wellness & Spa). Zozaya says groundbreaking could begin very soon and the resort should be open before 2012.

But that’s only just the beginning.

AMResorts is panning on expanding to Aruba and is currently negotiating with Turks and Caicos, Trinidad and Tobago, St, Thomas, Puerto Plata, Samana, Los Cabos, Cozumel and Ixtapa.

This is arguably the most aggressive we’ve seen a company during the economic downturn, but Zozaya told us it should come as no surprise since times of crisis are when his company steps it up, noting that the company’s two biggest periods of growth prior to these new plans were from 2002-2003, following 9/11, and 2008-2009 during the beginning of the economic downturn.

“When there is no crisis it is difficult to grow because everyone is doing well,” he says. “When there is a crisis, you can maximize your spending and people need your business. When there isn’t a crisis, companies don’t need your money as much.

“The challenge is financing but we are outperforming everyone else. Banks and lenders who deal with hospitality companies all know who are performing and not performing,” Zoyaya continues. “Smaller companies do not have the track record like we do so in a time of crisis they will not be as good as we are.”
