Candis Niles, director of the Anguilla Tourist Board, sat down with Travel Agent recently and gave us an extensive update on the latest hotel happenings on the island. Here are some of the highlights.
A full-scale renovation of Anguilla’s legendary Malliouhana Hotel & Spa is well under way. After a two-year closure, the resort is being restored to its legacy by Auberge Resorts, leading developers and operators of award-winning small luxury resorts and private clubs. When it reopens this coming spring, Malliouhana, set on 20 acres of elevated beachfront land, will have 55 rooms, two beaches, two restaurants and bars, an extensive array of sports and fitness facilities, and a spa.
“We are very excited to have such a popular hotel coming back to the island,” says Niles, noting that the property has been closed for the last three years. “It just adds yet another element to Anguilla’s luxury resort experience.”
Overseeing the renovation is newly appointed General Manager John Vasatka, whose resume includes extensive resort management experience from reputable resorts around the Caribbean and as far flung as the Philippines and the Middle East. Agents should reach out to Vasatka ([email protected], 264-497-6111) with any queries.
Following its acquisition of the 18- hole Greg Norman Championship Golf Course, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa is moving toward phase two of the project, which includes the building of a new hotel. Demolition has already begun on the eastern end of the property to construct The Reef by CuisinArt.
The new hotel will feature a ballroom to accommodate 200 people; it will be the only true ballroom on this island. The focus of the hotel will be golf, weddings and group incentives. The Reef is expected to have 62 rooms, with a projected opening date of 2015. Agents should direct any questions to David Lyon ([email protected], 212-972-0880), director of sales and marketing.
The casually luxurious Frangipani Beach Resort, a 19-room boutique property, has begun an extensive renovation of its reception area and pool. All renovations are aimed at enhancing the property’s intimate and inviting atmosphere while accenting the natural beauty of its beachfront location on Meads Bay.
“It’s just one of those small, charming places in Anguilla and it’s looking to get better,” says Niles. “We have so many larger, well-known hotels on Anguilla but the smaller, boutique properties shouldn’t get overlooked either.”
For agent inquiries, the go-to person is Shannon Kircher ([email protected], 264-497-6442), director of marketing and communications.
Anguilla Great House has undergone modernization. The boutique beach resort, known for its breathtaking view of Rendezvous Bay, and colorful cottages, has enhanced its pool and pool deck area to provide an even more comfortable and visually appealing setting for guests this winter season. Agents should contact Will Fleming, general manager, at [email protected] or 264-497-6061.
Cap Juluca reopened last month with a number of enhancements, including new menus and a refreshed Pimms, the resort’s signature restaurant; more live entertainment and a new luxury cruiser, Juluca Pride, are available for private charters from Anguilla to St. Maarten and St. Barths. Agents should contact Carlos Lopes, general manager, at [email protected] or 264-497-6666.
Anacaona Boutique Hotel has reopened for the winter season with the addition of a Balinese spa. The Balinese Petite Spa at Anacaona Boutique Hotel offers a variety of services, starting at $45, including such traditional and exotic treatments as Balinese, Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi, Indian, Thai-style, and four-hand massages; as well as manicures and such. Anacaona also has added complimentary T’ai Chi classes several times a week. In addition to the poolside Firefly Restaurant, the resort also offers Pizza To Go with a variety of custom-made pies available daily (except Thursdays) from noon to 9:30 p.m.
Agents should get in touch with Frank Pierce ([email protected], 264-497-6827), director of sales and marketing, for more information.
Zemi Beach Resort and Spa, a new resort and residential development occupying 1,000-plus feet of white-sand beachfront in Shoal Bay East, recently completed its first homes and is on schedule to open by mid-2015. Covering nearly six acres, the resort will have 28 two- and three-bedroom residences priced from $2 million to $3.1 million. Residents and renters at Zemi Beach will have access to first-class facilities such as on-site restaurants, bars and lounges; a wine cellar; infinity-edge pools; a spa and fitness center; and an outdoor yoga terrace. Residences will range in size from approximately 2,500 to 3,900 square feet.
Zemi Beach Resort & Spa, which will be managed by Trust Hospitality, does not have a specific reservations or sales contact as it is still in the development phase, but agents can contact [email protected].
Tradewind Aviation, operator of first-class, short-range flights serving difficult-to-reach luxury destinations, has recently introduced its signature “Premium Scheduled” nonstop service between Anguilla and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Flights are offered five days a week, Thursdays through Mondays, with both morning and afternoon service offered in each direction. Tradewind Aviation flights accommodate eight passengers in leather seating and air-conditioning with complimentary refreshments, snacks, beer and wine.
“We are really looking to target some nontraditional markets such as Dallas and Atlanta and are hoping that all the new airlift we are getting allows us to do this,” says Niles, noting that Anguilla is heavily targeting the Latin American market as well.
