Antigua's on a Roll - New and Old Hotels Continue to Make Island Desirable

October 30, 2007 By: Travel Agent Central Contributor Travel Agent

One of the first islands I traveled to when I started covering the Caribbean was Antigua. During a hard-hat tour of the constructions site for the Mediterranean Village of Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa it was easy to envision how this upscale property would fit into this great Caribbean hot spot.

Nearly a year later, not only has Sandals finished its project in Antigua, but other properties are setting up shop there, too, such as The Verandah Resort & Spa. This eco- friendly luxury retreat on Antigua's pristine northeast coast opened about two weeks ago, and another new proerty is the Hermitage Bay Resort, an all-inclusive luxury resort that has 25 secluded Cottage Suites as well as private villas with plunge pools that have been built into the natural landscape.

Sandals officially completed and unveiled the Mediterranean Village, which has 180 suites in six room categories, all with ocean views and a Mediterranean flair, plus more dining options, an expanded Red Lane spa and a sixth pool?-the largest in the eastern Caribbean.

And as Antigua continues to welcome new properties, its longstanding ones are also feeding off the increasing interest from consumers.

In fact, representatives of Curtain Bluff  met with Travel Agent to promote its 45th season, which will start when the property reopens on November 3. One way it’s changing with the times is by its May opening of a $3 million spa with five treatment rooms.

All of these properties – new and old – are just a small example of how popular Antigua is getting. Don’t be shy to suggest any of these properties to clients looking for an lesser-known, unspoiled island in the Caribbean.
