Viceroy Anguilla

September 24, 2009 By: Joe Pike Travel Agent

Anguilla, With its luxury resorts, continues to top Travel Agent’s list of favorite Caribbean islands. The island, part of the British West Indies in the Eastern Caribbean, just five miles from St. Martin, is best known for its white sand beaches—33 in all—and clear turquoise waters.

Anguilla can be accessed by private jet, American Eagle flights through San Juan, and many direct flights to neighboring St. Martin or through the island hub of Antigua (for access from UK/Europe). A convenient ferry service to Anguilla from St. Martin is also available.

The only downside was that the destination hadn’t seen a new resort in nearly a decade. That is, until now.

Enter the much-anticipated Viceroy Anguilla. Slated to fully open in November, the new property is set on 35 acres of beachfront land along Barnes Bay and Meads Bay.

The island’s first resort in nine years will include an array of 166 accommodations, comprising freestanding villas, townhomes, penthouses and single-story residences.

Here’s everything you need to know before selling this property in time for the holiday season—consider it an early Christmas gift.

A Great Spot

Viceroy Anguilla spreads itself out on 3,200 feet of beachfront and bluff-tops on Meads and Barnes bays, both prime beaches on the coveted northwest shore of Anguilla. Deep waters and coral shelves are found just off the shore.

Freestanding four- and five-bedroom villas, with interiors ranging in size from 3,820 to 6,185 square feet, will overlook the water. Each will include expansive outdoor living space, from 1,938 to 3,331 square feet, as well as a private infinity pool.

Oceanfront townhomes of three to four bedrooms will range from 3,099 to 4,423 interior square feet. The outdoor living space, each also with a private infinity pool, will have an area of 1,099 to 2,115 square feet.

Resort Residences will be on offer as studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units. In addition, five flexible floor plans will be available to guests who desire penthouses.

Travel Agent was told that the best rooms are the four- or five-bedroom Bluff Top Villas, which have a 180-degree view of the sunrise and the sunset. All of the other rooms are sunset-only.

The Spa at Viceroy Anguilla

Poised at the water’s edge, the 8,000-square-foot Spa at Viceroy Anguilla is based on three founding principles: Balance, Breath and Beauty. Addressing the whole person, the spa offers a collection of wellness rituals, including massages, body polishes, wraps, facials, manicures and pedicures as well as a diverse array of specialized excursions, classes and experiences. Spa rituals will be available in-room and beachside while the spa facility awaits final touches.

Food and Drink

Dining choices from beachside grills to elegant signature meals and family-style portions to tapas will be on offer. Live local music and inspiring architecture provide the topping for the experiences. Spa cuisine and menu items for the health-conscious will also be available.

Cobà is the resort’s signature restaurant with views of both Barnes and Meads bays. A 180-plus-seat restaurant with a lounge, it has both indoor and outdoor dining.

Bamboo Bar & Grill is a casual 100-plus-seat restaurant offering a beach-casual grilled cuisine with a steakhouse theme in the evenings.

The terrace restaurant, Aleta, will serve Caribbean and Continental cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It can accommodate more than 200 people and overlooks the sunrise pool from a central location on the resort.

Two trendy bars, the Half Shell and the Sunset Lounge, are in the works. The Half Shell is carved out of the side of the cliff on Barnes Bay. This enclave will serve colorful frozen cocktails and cold beer on tap. The Sunset Lounge has an adults-only infinity pool that overlooks the setting sun. DJ mixes of calypso and reggae sounds (with a South-Beach-meets-tranquility vibe) will fill the air. A collection of aged rums, Cuban cigars and fine champagnes will be the lounge’s specialty. Tapas and light fare will be served every evening.

Recreation & Shopping

Viceroy will have three swimming pools: an adults-only bluff-top infinity pool, a family bluff-top infinity pool with cabanas and a family beachside pool.

A swim-through grotto at the separation point of Barnes and Meads bays has phosphorescent fish and coral for some of the best snorkeling in Anguilla.

There will also be an Aquatic Center with facilities for a wide range of non-motorized water sports, including sailing, windsurfing and snorkeling.

A 1,500-square-foot boutique will house a unique selection of women’s and men’s apparel and accessories as well as lifestyle accessories. An intimate sundry store will also serve guests.

VIP Service

For clients staying in villas, townhomes or penthouses, the resort will have designated lifestyle assistants or butlers. They will act as personal ambassadors to the island and its culture.

Guests arriving in St. Martin will be greeted by a resort host and escorted to a luxury yacht for the 30-minute ride to Anguilla. Guests arriving in Anguilla will be escorted to a luxury vehicle and driven to the nearby resort.

Who to Book for

Anguilla was made for couples, but this resort will make for a great family vacation as well. There are certain areas of the hotel that are meant for adults while others welcome children. The resort’s Kids Center will host all supervised activities, such as kite-making/flying and sailing, sandcastle-building and pottery, safe-snorkeling and aqua Olympics and Caribbean-style bonfires.

Also to be incorporated into Viceroy Anguilla are a variety of meeting, executive summit, business conference, social and personal celebration spaces. For more information, travel agents should e-mail Director of Sales & Marketing Virgil Napier at [email protected].
