Oceanwide Expeditions is now offering travelers a chance to see Antarctica at a new, discounted rate. The “Spectacular Ross Sea” voyage takes passengers through the Ross Sea, a bay south of the Arctic Circle with an ice shelf almost as large as the size of France.
The 32-day trips depart on January 13, 2017, from Ushuaia, Argentina and February 15, from Bluff, New Zealand on Oceanwide Expeditions’ Ortelius, an ice-strengthened vessel equipped with two helicopters to take travelers to places unreachable by ship. The two itineraries are the same but in reverse, the first sailing from South America to New Zealand and the second from New Zealand to South America.
On the journey, travelers will sail into the Antarctic Peninsula, across the Polar Circle, visit Peter I Island and sail in the Bellingshausen Sea along the ice-edge of “deep Antarctica” into the Ross Sea. Here, passengers will board helicopters, landing on the Ross Ice Shelf, a glacier said to be the world’s largest body of ice with 164-foot ice walls. The trip makes a final stop in the uninhabited sub-Antarctic Campbell Island before its conclusion.
Other highlights of the trip include flying to the driest place on Earth, the Dry Valleys and visiting the historic huts of Arctic explorers Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott.
