Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide recently sponsored two of the eight Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Education Foundation (CHTAEF) scholarships totaling $28,900. The official presentation was made at an award ceremony on July 23 at Curtain Bluff in Antigua.

Scholarship recipient Sendy-Ann Bethune Jamaica noted that she is very cognoscente of giving back to the community from which she has learned so much about the economic importance of hospitality and tourism in the region. Bethune Jamaica is studying for her P.D. in hotel and restaurant management at Ashworth College and has had several years of experience in the hospitality industry, receiving many accolades at her current job position.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide also sponsored scholar Lana Williams who is studying for her P.D. in bread, funshaped cakes, chocolate and gluten-free brunch at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE). Williams is currently an employee of Curtain Bluff and plans to continue to hone her skills in four courses at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York. The scholar notes that experiencing and learning new skills will enable her to reach out to members of her community and will thereby show others the joys and opportunities the culinary field can provide.

In 2012, the CHTAEF awarded a total of 35 scholarships after receiving 70 applications covering 15 Caribbean countries and totaling $215,100. Scholarship recipients range in age from 17 to 29 years − each planning to continue or commence studies in various specialities in the hospitality industry.

Applicants for this scholarship opportunity were requested to write an essay describing why they were most deserving of the scholarships, how the scholarships would change their lives and in what ways they would contribute to the growth and development of the tourism sector in their respective country.
