No Damage From New Zealand Earthquake; Aftershocks Felt in Victoria

The New Zealand Heraldis reporting that a 6.5 magnitude earthquake west of Taupo, New Zealand today was felt throughout the North and South islands, but that no damage has been reported.

The quake, which struck at 3:36 pm local time, was 93 miles deep, 18 miles west of Taupo.

The quake was felt throughout the lower North Island and as far south as Christchurch.

Meanwhile, an earthquake in Victoria, Australia, is leaving the state with aftershocks that may continue for a while, Geosciences Australia told the Herald Sun.

A 3.7-magnitude aftershock was the second and most violent since the initial 4.4 magnitude quake hit Victoria at 11:32 am local time today.

The original quake was felt in Melbourne's Central Business District and the southeastern suburbs.
