Bahamas Dispatches “Tourism Ambassadors”

October 6, 2009 By: Joe Pike

The Bahamas launched in July a unique program in which “tourism ambassadors” are deployed to the streets to assist visitors looking for the most popular sites and attractions. Although it was launched this summer, it was never officially announced until this week.

There are presently 18 tourism ambassadors working as part of the “Ask Me” program in downtown Nassau. The tourism ambassadors are comprised of four recently-retired tourism staff members who previously worked in the Visitor Relations Unit and 14 students who are enrolled in Tourism Studies at the College of The Bahamas. They work on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (days of peak cruise ship activity) between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to noon and on each given day there are a total of six ambassadors available to provide personal attention and answer any questions visitors may have. All ambassadors can be identified by bright green vests marked “Ask Me.”

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism established the program in partnership with College of The Bahamas, giving Tourism Studies students an opportunity to gain experience in assisting visitors. The tourism ambassador program also provides The Bahamas an opportunity to learn more about visitors – what are they most interested in seeing and experiencing and how the destination can better educate travelers on the attractions available in Nassau prior to arrival.
