A Look Ahead for Los Cabos

October 7, 2014 By: Meagan Drillinger

Mexico Update

In just two weeks Los Cabos is ready to welcome back tourists following the Category 3 Hurricane Odile that struck on September 14. The hurricane, which tore across the Baja Peninsula, left thousands without power, electricity or potable water. The Mexican government, however, sprung into action and the destination is reporting that it is well on its way to being back and better than ever.

According to the Mexico Tourism Board, approximately 5,000 hotel rooms in Los Cabos are expected to open by October 15, with an additional 7,000 rooms to open by November 15 and a final 10,000 rooms to become available by December 15. In addition, electricity, phone, internet and potable water have been fully restored to the tourist destination of Cabo San Lucas.

We have reached out to the Mexico Tourism Board for further comment on the current state in Los Cabos but have not received a response. We will update as soon as we have more information.

Looking Ahead

"The news that has encouraged us the most is that the investments are not going to stop in Los Cabos; rather, hoteliers and owners who may have considered hotel renovations in 2015 are taking this as an opportunity to handle any remodeling now. This will not only allow Los Cabos time to recover but several of our hotels will now be upgraded in terms of facilities, landscaping and services," Renato Mendonca, president of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, said in a statement.

There were also a slew of hotel projects that were slated to open in Los Cabos in the next few years. The two anticipated golf resorts, Quivira Golf Club by Jack Nicklaus and Diamante's El Cardonal by Tiger Woods, are scheduled to open on October 9 and mid-December, respectively.

Next year Thompson was slated to open the 115-room Thompson Cabo San Lucas. At this time, the hotel tells Travel Agent that they are still assessing the damage to determine whether or not the opening date will be pushed back.

The Park Hyatt Los Cabos, which is set to open in 2015, is still on track for its scheduled opening date. The resort will have 196 rooms and 36 Park Hyatt-branded residences. In addition, the hotel will feature meeting and event facilities, dining and a 13,000-square-foot spa and fitness center.

A Ritz-Carlton Reserve is scheduled to open in Los Cabos in 2016, and according to Ritz-Carlton, that property is still on track to open as planned.
