Bill May “Miss or Graze” Bermuda, May Pose Danger to Carolinas

August 18, 2009 By: Joe Pike

CNN reports that Hurricane Bill blew toward land early Tuesday, edging closer to the West Indies with nearly 100 mph winds. Meteorologists, however, said various weather models showed the storm either “missing or grazing” the west side of Bermuda as it heads toward the East Coast of the U.S., according to the report. Although imodels show it may pose danger to the Carolinas, it may also curve back to sea before reaching the U.S.

The National Hurricane Center said Bill, the first hurricane of the 2009 Atlantic season, is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours. At 5 a.m. Tuesday, Bill was heading west-northwest and predicted to follow that path for the next two days. The storm was centered about 810 miles east of the Leeward Islands, a chain located where the Caribbean meets the western Atlantic. Bill was a Category 2 storm in the classification system used by the hurricane center.
