Embratur, The Brazil Tourism Board, Names New President

July 12, 2011 By: Joe Pike

Flávio Dino, a former federal congressman, was appointed president of Embratur, the Brazil Tourism Board, on June 29. At the swearing in ceremony, Dino spoke about the diversity of tourism offerings available throughout the country, the hospitality of the Brazilian people and the objectives for the tourism sector leading up to 2020.

The Minister of Tourism Pedro Novais welcomed the new President saying, “Mr. Dino is here to enhance and carry on Embratur’s work to promote tourism.”

Dino plans to build on Embratur’s work to date noting that over the past few years, Brazil has become a tourism leader in South America. “This shows that our work is on the right path,” he said.

Part of Embratur’s success can be attributed to the Aquarela Plan, an international tourist marketing strategy that sets forth goals and objectives over the next decade with a focus on five key segments: sun and beach, eco-tourism, culture, sports and business/events.

The plan calls for a closer evaluation of Brazil’s status and perception after the two upcoming global sporting events, the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, and stipulates goals for inbound, foreign visitors and international revenue through 2020.

Mário Moysés, former president of Embratur, opened the formal session by thanking attendees for their support over the last four years during his tenure at the Tourism Ministry and Embratur.

“We have already obtained good results, but for Brazil to reach an even higher level of awareness, we need to channel more and more resources toward international promotion, touristic infrastructure and investment,” he said.
