The Eyes Have it at Cavallo Point Lodge

March 12, 2009 By: Mark Rogers

We’ve all been there – it’s a nice enough hotel room but the art on the walls is hideous. My low point was a twin-bedded room with the exact same oil painting hanging over each bed. You won’t encounter this Twilight Zone moment at Cavallo Point - the Lodge at the Golden Gate. The lodge has just unveiled an expansive collection of 800 permanent and rotating exhibits of contemporary photography and art. The works are by both renowned and emerging Bay Area artists, as well as national and international artists. You’ll find art installed throughout the lodge's buildings, 142 guest rooms and on-site public gallery. Stand-out artists and photographers include Imogen Cunningham, Ruth Asawa, Gregory Colbert, Richard Barnes, Linda Connor, Lukas Felzmann, and David Maisel. No two images are the same, making the rooms, in essence, mini galleries. A Cavallo Point Portfolio photography catalogue in each room provides a description and images from each photographer's body of work Cavallo Point Lodge is San Francisco Bay Area's first national park lodge. It opened last summer as an upscale and environmentally sustainable base camp where the city's urban edge meets the rugged Marin Coast.
