Princess Cruises Going Green in LA

Denizens of Los Angeles will soon notice a bit less smog when Princess cruise ships call on the city's port. That's because the cruise line has signed an agreement to turn off its ship's engines and hook up to cleaner electrical power while docked at the Port of Los Angeles beginning in 2008. Similar projects debuted in Juneau, Alaska, in 2001 and more recently in Seattle in 2005. The new measure is part of the Port of Los Angeles' Alternative Maritime Power Program. Shore power, also known as "cold ironing," allows ships to turn off its diesel engines and connect to electrical power, which can run all onboard services during day-long calls.
