Cancun's New Marketing Campaign Includes New Destinations

Cancun is expanding its marketing reach in the U.S. but incorporating key nearby destinations to include when targeting American travelers. The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau has redesigned its marketing campaign to include Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox and Isla Contoy

The addition of these smaller destinations opens up the scope of Cancun to include eco-adventures and more rustic destinations. They can be visited as standalone destinations, or added on to a more traditional Cancun itinerary.

Isla Mujeres, or the Island of Women, is located northeast of Cancun and accessed by a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland. It's known for a "cozy" atmosphere of beach restaurants and bars, and is home to the annual While Shark Festival, along with Garrafon Natural Reef Park, dive sites and beaches.

One of Isla Mujeres’ best properties will be rebranded by AMResorts beginning June 1. Villa Rolandi Isla Mujeres will be renamed and officially inaugurated as Zoetry Villa Rolandi Isla Mujeres Cancun on December 15, 2014. The property will feature 35 ocean-front suites with Jacuzzi terraces; gourmet dining; a full-service Spa & Thalasso Center with 10 treatment rooms, and a natural seawater pool; private marina with its own 42-foot yacht that transports guests between Cancun and the resort; and the Endless Privileges program.

Isla Holbox is a tiny fishing village located about two hours from Cancun. This small island, part of the Yum Balam Reserve, is home to flamingos, whale sharks and other species. Locals get by on bicycles, golf carts or on foot and the island itself is known for boutique hotels, gastronomy festivals, kite surfing and seafood.

Isla Contoy, 18 miles north of Isla Mujeres, is considered one of the most important seabird nesting sites in Mexico. It has been protected since 1961 and declared a national park in 1998. The island is home to more than 150 migrating and resident bird species.

Puerto Morelos is a fishing village 20 miles south of Cancun and the only "new" destination reachable by car. There are a number of hotels and resorts located in the bohemian town. Several fishing tournaments are held throughout the year, and it is known for its handicraft shops, and scuba activities.
