There's a new kid in Cancun that is shaking things up on Mexico's Caribbean coast…and for the better. Travel Agent is just back from Nizuc Resort & Spa, the newest luxury resort to debut in Cancun.
Traditionally, luxury travelers looking for a slice of Mexico's Yucatan coast have to head about an hour and a half south of the Cancun International Airport to Riviera Maya and Tulum to lounge in the lap of luxury. Not anymore. Nizuc Resort & Spa is just 10 minutes from Cancun's airport, and delivers service on par with any of the established and respected five-star resorts to the south.

Sitting on its own stretch of land away from the hotel zone, Nizuc is a quiet, secluded resort overlooking the ocean on an almost private strip of beach. Originally intended to be an Amanresort, the property has an Asian zen-quality that fuses beautifully with traditional Mexican seaside elements. The resort has six restaurants, two infinity pools, a spa by ESPA and more.
We stayed in room #221, an Ocean Suite, with its own balcony with day bed, master bedroom, and expansive bathroom with walk-in shower and deep soaking tub. This was an entry level room - they only become more elaborate from there! There are 29 pool villas, each with their own private plunge pool, tucked into private gardens. There are also Nizuc Residences, which were originally supposed to be owned properties part of the Amanresort, but now are just additional rooms that kept the Residences title. Note: All suites come with private butler service.

There are three fine dining restaurants: Ramona, the signature Mexican restaurant; Terra Nostra for Mediterranean fare; and Indochine, which serves a fusion of Asian favorites. We were able to sample food from each, and while all were out of this world, our favorite restaurant was Indochine. Try the sushi! (Good to know: The casual fare at Nizuc is also incredibly fresh and delicious. Be sure to try the ceviche and quesadillas poolside.)
At night visit Havana Lounge, a cigar club with sunken outdoor seating that is hidden among wading pools and foliage.
