Curacao Sees Whopping Increase in North American Arrivals

Curaçao’s tourism arrivals from North America went up 51 percent for the month of April, compared to April 2009. As of April, Curaçao’s arrival numbers from North America are up 31 percent overall for 2010.

Arrivals to Curaçao from the United States were up by 53 percent in April 2010 from April 2009. U.S. stopover arrivals grew from 2,529 in April 2009 to 3,864 in April 2010.

American Airlines reinstating a second flight daily from Miami to Willemstad, Curaçao’s capital city, is credited with much of the success, along with daily flights from Miami on Insel Air, Curaçao’s national carrier.

Curaçao rigorously increased marketing efforts in the North American market in 2009 with the “Hidden Treasure of the Caribbean” campaign, awarding one winner $500,000 after a scavenger hunt through the beautiful island of Curaçao, stopping at iconic landmarks.

Other factors for the increase in arrivals include an increase in hotel rooms. The Renaissance Curaçao opened in February of last year, with more than 230 rooms. The Baoase Luxury Resort opened in June of last year, followed by the recent opening of the new Hyatt Regency Curaçao in April, which is the island’s largest property with 350 rooms. Curaçao now has roughly 4,500 rooms.
