Eastern Caribbean, Guyana Rocked by Earthquakes

Several media outlets are reporting that sections of the Eastern Caribbean and Guyana were rocked by a pair of earthquakes shortly before noon on Thursday.

The Seismic Research Center at the University of the West Indies confirmed that tremors occurred in St. Lucia, Barbados and Martinique

According to the Jamaica Observer, the first earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale and the second measured 6.4. Caribbean Journal is reporting that the second quake, which occurred at around 11:16 a.m. local time, struck about 72 miles northeast of Bathsheba, Barbados, and about 82 miles northeast of Bridgetown, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to Caribbean Journal, the quake was also felt in Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and even as far south as Suriname.
