An increasing amount of Caribbean hotels are taking a stance against Blackberry addicts and text-messaging junkies by promoting vacations where such technology is best left at the door.
Resorts dissuading guests from using technology that may interfere with a relaxing vacation are nothing new, but they are certainly growing. To name a few, Anse Chastanet and its sister property Jade Mountain in St. Lucia are proponents of a technology-free vacation, offering no TVs, phones or Internet service. Tiamo Resorts, which we featured in our February 18 issue, is a Bahamas resort that also offers little resources to the outside world, instead aiming for guests to forget about the distractions of the outside world and solely devote their time to relaxing. And now Arawak Beach Inn in Anguilla joins the gang of hotels promoting technology abstinence. In an effort to help the overworked, technology-addicted population to break free of their PDAs, phones and Internet obsession, The Arawak Beach Inn in Anguilla has introduced an “Isolation Getaway” package, with rates starting at $999 per person for seven nights. The tech-free guidelines will be enforced by property’s innkeeper. The package includes oceanfront accommodations, daily breakfast, four dinners at the Inn’s Arawak Café, a three-day car rental, a private day trip to an uninhabited island complete with a gourmet picnic lunch, a deep-sea fishing excursion, three days of snorkel equipment and round-trip airport or ferry transfers.
