Paradise Island Founder Dies at 97


The New York Times reports that Huntington Hartford, credited with originating Paradise Island, the Bahamas, died at his home in Lyford Cay, the Bahamas, last week at the age of 97.

After buying the majority of Hog Island (as it was called then) in 1959, Huntington renamed it Paradise Island and immediately followed the purchase by assisting in the development of arguably the destination’s most prominent resort, the One&Only Ocean Club. He also designed the resort’s famous Versailles Gardens.

Cayman Islands' Director of Tourism Resigns

Pilar Bush, the Cayman Islands' director of tourism for over the past three years, is resigning as of June 30, stating a desire to spend more time with family. Shomari Scott, deputy director of international marketing, will be appointed acting director.

In the release, Bush said, “It has been a privilege to serve as director of tourism for my country for the past three-and-a-half years and to be part of a talented team of committed tourism professionals in the public and private sector. While this is perhaps one of the most exciting, challenging and fulfilling times to be director of tourism, this very hard decision has been made in the best interests of my young family." New Luxury Resort to Open in Jamaica This Fall


Solis The Palmyra Resort and Spa, a luxury property in the Rose Hall section of Montego Bay, Jamaica, is slated to open its doors this fall.

The property will feature 299 rooms, including 82 guest rooms, 200 one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, six penthouses and 11 luxury villas along with two swimming pools that overlook the Caribbean Sea. The best rooms are the luxury villas, which are three-level, free-standing buildings that come with three bedrooms and a balcony. Rates for those rooms start at $3,000. There will also be four restaurants and a 30,000-square-foot spa. The property offers a 10 percent commission.
