Update – Hurricane Sandy Rounds Florida, Could Hit New Jersey Next Week

hurricaneHurricane Sandy is pounding parts of Florida and Georgia with tropical storm-force winds, and could hit New Jersey early next week, Boston.com reports.

The hurricane made landfall in Cuba as a Category 2 storm, killing two dozen people in the region and destroying buildings.

The system is currently heading northeast along the eastern U.S. coast, but forecasters expect it to make a westward hook before striking New Jersey early next week. By this time the storm will have combined with a cold front, greatly expanding the size of the storm to possibly an area of winds of 40 miles per hour or more extending 250 miles from the storm’s center. Monday night and Tuesday New Jersey residents can expect anywhere from two to five inches of rainfall, as well as winds comparable to a strong nor’easter.
