Active Travelers Seek Out Cayman Island’s Sister IslandsOctober 13, 2015 By: Cayman Islands Department of Tourism
Cayman Island's Sister Islands
Cosmopolitan Grand Cayman may be the most visited of the three Cayman Islands, but its sister islands Cayman Brac and Little Cayman offer plenty of natural beauty to explore just a short plane ride away. And if you’ve never been to any of the three islands or you want to plan a return visit, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism is making now the time for travel agents to discover all three islands with its special deals for qualified agents.
Adventurous Cayman Brac
Only 12 miles long and one mile wide, Cayman Brac packs a lot into its 14 square miles. Visitors here can indulge in adventure, opt for a quiet respite, or mix it up with days exploring and days simply lounging at the pool or beach.
The island has 35 heritage sites including forest, beach walks, bird watching spots, caves, cliff trails and wetlands. Hikes and visit to the sites can be taken with nature guides at the Heritage House and Interpretive Centre at Northeast Bay. Among these sites, the Great Cave boasts incredible stalagmite and stalactite formations and birders will delight in a walk along the Parrot Reserve’s two-mile nature trail. Divers can explore 50 dive sites off the island’s coast, including the scuttled Russian freighter, the M/V Captain Keith Tibbetts, and the sunken dolphin statue “Oceanic Voyagers”.

Among the places to stay on the island, two are currently undergoing renovations. Brac Reef Beach Resort is expected to re-open in December 2015 as the Cayman Brac Beach Resort with a new free form pool, multi-level bar and upgraded accommodations. Le Soleil d’Or has added a new beach club and beach studio accommodation, two farm-to-table restaurants, a full-service spa and a new fitness facility. In addition to the property’s upscale cottage accommodations, a small boutique hotel is slated to open in early 2016.

Tranquil Little Cayman
Even smaller than Cayman Brac at only 10 miles long and one mile wide, Little Cayman is the place to truly go off the grid and escape. So underdeveloped, Little Cayman is probably home to more birds and wild iguanas than people with a population of only approximately 115.
Time here is spent diving its 56 sites, including Bloody Bay Wall, a short swim from the shore with a drop-off that begins at 18 feet below the surface and reaches to more than 1,000 feet. Booby Pond Nature Reserve is the spot for bird watching, including the largest colony of red-footed boobies in the Caribbean. Fishing is big on the island with the 15-acre Tarpon Lake a good spot for gamefish. Visitors can kayak to Little Cayman’s Owen Island for a day of swimming and snorkeling and further seclusion.
Bicycling is the best way to explore the nearly-flat island for active travelers; though there is no traffic to deal with, do keep a look out for the “Iguana Crossing” signs and the island’s large wild iguana population. And when it’s time to rest at night, Little Cayman has more than 130 rooms in resorts and condominiums surrounded by the island’s sweet solitude.
