Report: Possible Hurricane Has Sights Set on Mexico, Latin America

CNN reported earlier this morning that Tropical Storm Ernesto could turn into a hurricane by tonight, prompting government officials in Mexico and Latin America to begin taking safety measures.

The storm, which is currently making its way through the southern Caribbean and heading towards the Yucatan Peninsula, has caused Nicaraguan officials to evacuate 1,500 people from coastal areas. Ernesto is expected to pass north of the Honduran coast through Tuesday.

The Mexican and Belizean governments issued hurricane warnings Monday as the storm advanced.

According to the report, Belize, the southern Yucatan Peninsula and northren Guatemala may get as many as 12 inches of rain in some areas, which are likely to cause "dangerous flash floods and mud slides over higher terrain," the center warned.
