Following approval from the Chinese central government in Beijing, The Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group have broken ground on the Shanghai Disney Resort, which kicked off with a ceremony held earlier today, April 8.
The resort, which is scheduled to debut in about five years, will bring all the lovable Disney magic to the highly anticipated China outpost. It will include Shanghai Disneyland, a Magic Kingdom-style park complete with Disney characters and all-new attractions, which have been designed specifically for a Chinese audience. The park will also have several themed lands in addition to an interactive Disney castle that will sit at the heart of the park.
The 963-acre site will sit in Pudong, Shanghai and will have additional room to expand in the future. There will be two themed hotels, a large retail, dining and entertainment venue, recreational facilities, a lake and parking/transportation hubs. An approximate $3.7 billion has been invested into the project and an additional $.7 billion to build other aspects of the resort.
