Live Like a Local: Four Off the Beaten Track Hotels in Paris

With the proliferation of dozens of new hotels opening in Paris in the past few years it can sometimes be overwhelming to choose one. Do you stay in a reliable chain hotel in a central location mostly catering to tourists or do you venture to explore a real Parisian neighborhood and the charms of a small boutique hotel? We choose the latter for this article and share four off the beaten track hotels that offer a unique Paris experience.

Hotel Particulier Montmartre

Hotel Particulier

Located in the hills of Montmartre, nestled away from the touristy area near Sacre Coeur, is a hidden gem behind a private gated enclave. Hotel Particulier Montmartre, a former 18th century mansion once owned by the Hermes family, was bought by Morgane Rousseau in 2007 and converted into a hotel. Her son Oscar Comtet took over the reigns in 2012 and added a bar and restaurant. The highlight of the hotel is the beautiful, serene garden measuring 10,000 feet, designed by Louis Benech, the landscape artist of the Tuileries Garden. An oasis in the middle of Paris, the romantic garden is the setting for cocktails, dinners, and brunch. The hotel features only five rooms and the top floor, 900 square feet deluxe suite has an open bathroom and panoramic views of Paris.

Pavillon de Le Lettre

Billed as the first literary hotel of Paris, Pavillon des Lettres will have you dreaming of the most beloved French writers while you comfortably sleep in their luxuriously appointed rooms and suites. The 26 rooms correspond to the letters of the alphabet and each letter represents a European writer or poet: B for Baudelaire, S for Shakespeare, H for Victor Hugo, W for Virginia Wolf  and Z for Emile Zola. Interior designer Didier Benderli has artfully mixed classic French décor with modern touches and cleverly stenciled the immortal words of each writer on the headboards of the beds. Molton Brown bathroom products, bathrobe and slippers, iPhone docking system, and flatscreen LED TV are some of the many amenities offered. Located on a quiet street near the Elysees Palace, the hotel is walking distance to the exclusive boutiques on the rue Faubourg Saint Honore, the famed Champs Elysees and Place de la Concorde.
